“You can measure your worth by your dedication to your path…
not by your successes or failures.”
~Elizabeth Gilbert, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear
Have you ever opened your mouth and been completely surprised by the words you’ve heard? The words you’ve spoken, yet you weren’t convinced they were your own?
As I’ve shared with some of you, this happened to me nine years ago when I opened my mouth and said, I’m going to write a book for moms. I was surprised (rather shocked) when I said it. I knew those words weren’t mine. I knew, simply because I was not a writer (my 11th grade English teacher had already confirmed this). Yet, I knew those words came from somewhere…and I couldn’t shake them from my being. They were the inspirational seeds for my upcoming book, Mothering with Courage—and they were coming from somewhere. As if someone was gently nudging me saying, Write your book.
Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love discusses inspiration in her book, BIG MAGIC… Creative Living Beyond Fear (I love this book!). Goodread states: “Gilbert encourages us to uncover the “strange jewels” that are hidden within each of us. Whether we are looking to write a book, make art, find new ways to address challenges in our work, embark on a dream long deferred, or simply infuse our everyday lives with more mindfulness and passion, Big Magic cracks open a world of wonder and joy.”
My world cracked open a couple of years ago when I decided it was time for this book to be written (and I meant it this time!) and I was the one to write it. So I wrote…and wrote. I was in the midst of writing Mothering with Courage when I began to read BIG MAGIC.
Liz Gilbert captured my soul when I read her words…
“But inspiration is still sitting there right beside me, and it is trying. Inspiration is trying to send me messages in every form it can—through dreams, through portents, through clues, through coincidences, through déjà vu, through kismet, through surprising waves of attraction and reaction, through the chills that run up my arms, through the hair that stands up on the back of my neck, through the pleasure of something new and surprising, through stubborn ideas that keep me awake all night long . . . whatever works. Inspiration is always trying to work with me.” ~Elizabeth Gilbert, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear
I now know in my heart that Mothering with Courage was divinely inspired and I was chosen to write it. Because of the pains and joys of my own childhood, my beautiful and unique mothering journey and my experience witnessing many mother’s journeys in my professional life…I was being asked to share my own wisdom. And to help support the journey of mothers and children in the world.
Mothering with Courage, is my gift to the world and to the beautiful moms and their children.
I now want to ask you (as I was asked while reading BIG MAGIC)…
“Do you have the courage to bring forth the treasures that are hidden within you?”
Thank you Liz Gilbert for your amazing words and support in my creative journey. I hope one day to finally meet you!
And thank you Lydia, an Earth Angel, in the West Ashley Barnes and Noble. Because of you and your belief in my book, it is now proudly displayed on the Barnes and Noble information desk.
I’m counting the days until Mothering with Courage is birthed on May 9, 2017. It takes nine months to birth a baby and it only took nine years to birth this book!
I’m also preparing to leave May 2 on a six city media book tour. Stay tuned as I’ll be posting my Mothering with Courage BIG MAGIC experiences on Facebook (BonnieComptonBooks and Parenting Partners, LLC) and Instagram (@BonnieComptonBK)
I’d be grateful if you’d share this blogpost with others out in the world. And if you’re interested in pre-ordering my book this week, here is the link:
In closing, I remind you to keep believing in your dreams because… Dreams Really Do Come True!
One more thought…the past five years, each time I visited a Barnes and Noble, I stood in front the Parenting section and envisioned my book on the shelf (I didn’t know the title or what the cover would look like but I dreamed that one day it would be there…and there it is! SO grateful! Thank you Barnes and Noble in Charleston.) Hoping one day it will be in all Barnes and Noble stores. I’d appreciate it if you help share the Mothering with Courage love by asking your local Barnes and Noble to carry the book. You can share with them that at my first book signing, 18 copies were sold within 2 hours.
Wishing all Moms a beautiful upcoming Mother’s Day weekend…and may we all continue to mother with courage…
